From indigenous players like Gaana to global giants in Spotify to the operator driven music services like Jio Saavn and Wynk, all want a share of the music streaming pie. Considering Jio buying out Saavn, the installs were expected to bump up as it now becomes a part of the Jio content bouquet. However, the time spent streaming on the app declined from 14 min to 10 mins Dec 19 Vs Aug 20.

No surprises with Google Play Music raking high in installs and low in time spent listening because the app comes default installed in the Android OS. Spotify score unexpectedly high in time spent listening with other competitors not even close. Good content and highly intelligent music AI recommended playlists seems to be doing the trick. Considering the that high playtime, there would be no surprises if Spotify would be the one with highest subscription bases revenue.

Interestingly, less than two million of the over 130 million Indians who listen to music online pay for it. The rest of them get it free. The biggest streaming players, Jio Saavn and Gaana, are ad-driven.
