AI Is Changing Hiring: Your Degree Matters Less Than What You Build

A few weeks ago, I was in a conversation with a hiring manager at a fast-growing startup. He told me something that stuck: “I don’t even look at the college anymore. I look at what they’ve built.”

I’ve been thinking about that line since.

For most of my career, the college name was the first filter. It opened or closed doors before anyone read a single word of the resume. Tier 1 college? You got the call. Tier 2? You may or may not. It wasn’t fair. But it was the system.

AI has started to break that system.

The Old Game Was About Access. The New One Is About Output.

Here’s what changed. Tools that used to require years of technical training — building a working app, creating an automation, designing a functional prototype — are now accessible to anyone willing to learn how to prompt and iterate. The barrier wasn’t just education. It was access to tools. AI removed that barrier.

This matters enormously for someone who graduated from a Tier 2 or Tier 3 college in India. The credential gap still exists on paper. But the output gap? That’s closeable.

What Have I Seen in Practice

I’ve been working at the intersection of marketing, business, and AI adoption for over a decade. And what I’m seeing now is something that wasn’t possible five years ago — people demonstrating real, tangible competence before they even get an interview.

Someone wants to work at a D2C brand? They audit the brand’s current funnel, identify a gap, build a one-page AI-generated competitive analysis and present a solution. No invitation needed. No waiting for a job post.

That’s not a resume. That’s proof.

The Strategy for Anyone in Their 20s Right Now

Pick one company or role you want. Study it. Find a real problem — not a theoretical one. Then build a solution. It doesn’t have to be perfect. A rough AI automation workflow, a staging landing page, a creative brief, a market analysis. The point isn’t perfection. The point is intent made visible.

Hiring managers aren’t looking for finished products. They’re looking for people who think and do. A half-built solution with sharp thinking behind it says more than a polished resume.

This is the new cold outreach. Not “here’s my profile, please consider me” — but “here’s what I built because I thought you had this problem.”

The Resume Isn’t Dead. It’s Just Not Enough.

If you went to a known college or worked at a recognised brand, your resume still opens the first door. That’s real and it matters. Don’t dismiss it.

But the number of doors that resume alone can open is shrinking. The rooms you couldn’t get into before — because of your college, your background, your city — those rooms are more accessible now than they’ve ever been.

The credential is still useful. It’s just no longer the only thing that counts.

The question now isn’t where you studied. It’s what you’ve built since.
